Dining Out

A lot of cities have a restaurant week. Restaurants put together special menus for a fixed price. It’s a great way to try new places, go to favorite restaurants or give a local spot another chance. The general idea behind restaurant weeks is to increase business in slow seasons and in Sarasota, summer is the slow season.

When I moved to a Sarasota, Polo Grill was a great spot for dinner. The food was good, service solid and the restaurant itself is close. Over the last few years the menu has undergone some changes and our last few visits were disappointing. The last time we went here the service was so bad I actually asked the hostess for a new waiter. Generally I am very patient with waitstaff having worked in a restaurant in college, but even I can get frustrated.

We decided to give Polo Grill a second chance tonight since the Savor Sarasota menu looked pretty good. We headed out early and arrived shortly after they opened for the evening. Service was slow. Again. The waitress was more attentive than the last time we were there, but this went downhill as our meal progressed. About an hour and a half after we were seated we had eaten our appetizers (which were good) and our main courses (ok but not great) but still had no dessert. We waited. And waited. The waitress told us twice that dessert was on its way, but we finally flagged her down and asked for the check. I hate to say it, but this was twice in a row where the food was only ok and the service was terrible. As much as I want to support local businesses, I think this one is crossed off our list.

Soup and Biscuits

A lot of times I find multiple recipes and combine them with changes based on what I have in the house. This time, I found a recipe and flat out stole it. I follow a couple of food blogs and My Favorite Pastime is one of the good ones. Now the original recipe did call for ham, but I left that out. I started with cheddar and chives, flour, butter and buttermilk. I think my favorite part of this was mixing it with my hands.

20140209-175813.jpg I rolled out the dough, cut them up and baked them. They were fantastic.

To go with these I made Potato Leek soup. I tried a different version than the typical creamy soup, and I always trust an Emeril recipe. I was skeptical at first because of the beef stock in this, and I didn’t have chicken stock and I totally forgot the thyme and cream. But I have to say, it worked. It was a nice, light soup that was also very filling. This combination really worked.

On a totally non-food note, I took my pretty bicycle to the grocery store today. It was really a nice ride down, but I had issues getting home. Bob rigged a milk crate to the back and it worked pretty well except for corners. So … He had to come pick up the groceries so I could ride home. The eggs didn’t make it, but everything else was fine. I just need to get my basket for the back before I take it to the grocery again.

Shrimp!

I don’t do seafood. Haven’t in years. Something about throwing up for hours that made eating it less than appealing. But after the visit to the allergist last year where I found out it is fish only (and really only really really allergic to anchovies) I started trying shellfish again. A piece of shrimp in Key West, a taste of Bob’s lobster at Marina Jack’s and the shrimp and rice ball at Mozaic on New Year’s. So far so good and this week, I decided to try cooking shrimp.

This was not an impulse cook. Bob and I really like the Hello Fresh boxes we started getting after I had to stop the veggie baskets because of work hour conflicts. I get to experiment with food and ingredients, but I don’t have to figure the experiment out a few nights a week. One of the options for this week’s delivery was a Cashew Chili Shrimp over brown rice. I figured it looked ok and I liked the idea of shrimp better than mushrooms and Alfredo sauce. Bob really liked the idea of shrimp so we went for it. After a seven meeting day today, I came home and tried my hand at shrimp.

I fully admit I was apprehensive about this little experiment. Would my stomach handle the shrimp? Would I be able to cook it ok (shrimp is temperamental and super easy to over cook)? Would I even like shrimp after all these years? Who knew, but worst case I have leftover pizza or need to take off work tomorrow.

Well, I started the rice, chopped the garlic, ginger and chili pepper and made the marinade with the cute little soy sauce packets they sent (along with the aromatics) and some olive oil.

I cooked the shrimp for a few minutes then added the snow peas and then the basil and cashews. I tossed everything and came up with a pretty little plate.

20140109-202010.jpg

The results: I went a little heavy on the chili pepper, which means Bob loved it. He thought the shrimp were cooked well (yea me) and had a good flavor. I liked them, but I liked the snow peas more. He also thought the shrimp were a really good quality for something you would buy (instead of fish up yourself I suppose) and was impressed with the overall plate. There was plenty for us – almost enough for a third serving, but Bob had seconds. All in all, a good little meal and I have to give Bob credit for the a Hello Fresh find. And just because I’m throwing around names of things, the podcast Bob found this from is The Morning Stream so if you are looking for an amusing morning radio type program, there is my one recommendation for the year.

Traveling at home

Sometimes we forget how nice it is to be where we live. Sarasota has a huge “season” where people come from the cold to visit and relax. We get our share of “spring breakers” although, admittedly, they are a slightly different type than Panama City. But even living here, I sometimes forget that it is a tourist place with lots to see and do and eat.

Friday, after and long a tiring week, Bob and I decided to check out a new restaurant downtown. Made is in the same space as the old Belgium restaurant. It opened relatively recently and after seeing “bacon wrapped corn dogs” Bob had to try it. I am not sure what I was expecting – probably descent food – but whatever it was, the actual restaurant exceeded those expectations.

20130323-191234.jpg
The decor was modern, a little on the loud side (style-wise) and casual. The waiter was super friendly, very good with explanations on dishes and even warned me about they corn on the cob (marinated in mayo, which I hate!) So, nice atmosphere, friendly service … but what about the food and drinks.

The wine menu isn’t extensive, but it has some solid wines on it. I can’t report on the beer since I didn’t even look. Bob and I picked out a Zinfandel (Rebellion – I had to to do it) that was simply fantastic. Smooth, lots of layers of flavor, and great finish. It was a 2009, so I was thrilled since that is, in my humble and non expert opinion, of of the best years for zins.

20130323-191707.jpg
While Bob had his bacon wrapped corndogs. I went with the duck empanadas. Wow. That’s it, just Wow! There was so much flavor in these, I could not believe it. I could have made a meal out of them with the corn and apple relish and the dipping sauce. The pastry was light enough to fade but heavy enough to be a real part of the dish. That makes no sense, but it does. Really. Point here being, very hard to pull off the perfect savory pastry and Made did it.

Somehow we have had several discussions involving chicken and waffles lately. I’m not sure why, or who started them, but they have been there all the same recently. So Bob went with the chicken and waffles and I went with the puffy tacos.

20130323-192129.jpg
Yet another explosion of flavor in those. The slaw on top paired perfectly with the pork and made just about the perfect mouthful. I didn’t really need the salsa, but it did make a nice addition to a few bites.

Today, when heading out to the pet store and butches we stopped by a local BBQ joint, Smackdaddy’s. They specialize in pork BBQ and Bob and I decided to split a Flying Pig sandwich. Pork loin, wrapped in pork belly, smoked, sliced, fried with bacon and piled with pulled pork and bacon on a bun. Yep – the waitress described it as everything except the ribs and a heart attack on a bun. She was right on both counts, but what a way to go. Splitting the sandwich was perfect for lunch.

A Week of Birthday Fun

20130301-203008.jpg

So it was my birthday this week. Thank you to everyone who called, texted, emailed and wish me a happy birthday. Yes, mom, that includes your 5:01am text. 🙂

I use to hate my birthday. Being the end of February means you get A LOT of questions growing up as to whether or not you have a “real” birthday or are a leap year baby and don’t really have a birthday. I hated it and just refused to acknowledge the day for a long time. But I’m over that and pretty much don’t care much either way; but a birthday is a great excuse for cake, so ill take it.

Speaking of cake, the week started out with mom and dad having us over for lunch and topping it off with a cute birthday cake. I have to say it was perfect – vanilla cake with vanilla icing and by gosh, it was cute

20130301-203416.jpg

Bob and I head across the pond for my spring break soon, so I was considering that my birthday present. But … I woke up that morning to find a pretty little box by the coffee pot. (Does he know me well or what? Is there any other place in the house where I am guaranteed to see it?).

20130301-203551.jpg
That pretty little box contained a beautiful pair of earrings that I have worn every day since. Can’t sleep in them week, but they are very, very pretty. Can’t get a good picture cause they sparkle but that’s ok.

We are still in meeting hell at work and have begun testing hell, so my time has been … booked, taken, short … take your pick. But Melissa took me out for a very nice lunch and we actually sat down and ate. I think it was the first day I didn’t work through lunch all month.

I got home on my birthday to find another little box on my doorstep.

Erin, my friend, you know me too well. Love them and can’t wait to break into the scrub! And the card was darn cute too.

We are going to head out to see Val and Bill this weekend, then it’s off to England soon for some time with Brad, Emmie and Logan. Emmie are plotting to get into the Bodleian library. We are smart girls, we’ll figure something out.

I did manage to cook tonight … Nothing fancy, mind you, but better than I’ve done in a few weeks.

20130301-204228.jpg
Pork tacos with onions and homemade tomatillo sauce. I used some extra spice in the sauce and it came out really well. Sharp, but not too hot. Good flavor and not bad for an end of the week meal. Maybe after break I can get back into cooking. I have so many things I want to try!

Hope everyone had a good week.

Orange-Thyme Chicken and Ham/Barley Soup

This weekend I wanted something on the lighter side.  The weather was perfect – low 80s – so salads and summer-y dishes were an option.  But the evenings were cool and it is January with football on, so soup sounded really good.  So … I went with both.

The soup was all home-made.  I started with the ham bone from the ham we had at Thanksgiving (yes, I kept it) and used that with some carrots, onion and celery for a nice broth. I let that simmer for a few hours, strained it, added new chopped carrots, celery, a can of diced tomatoes, some ham and barley.  Let it simmer for a little while longer and you have soup.  Really, really good soup.  Light, a little smokey, and lots of flavor.  I know what I am having for lunch this week.

Lunch was a little more summer-y.  I had made a similar salad a few months ago with all the fall flavors. This time I didn’t have sage or apple juice (and I know now not to attempt juicing my own apples) so I went with a citrus/thyme marinade.  So … juice of one lemon, juice of one orange, thyme, chopped scallions and some crushed garlic with a little bit of olive oil.  Marinade overnight (because we decided to have it today instead of yesterday). Pan fried with no oil – just drain the marinade and whatever was left was enough.  The salad was just lettuce, craisons, pecans, roasted butternut squash and a dressing of juice of one orange, olive oil, thyme, scallions and garlic.  That was it.  Nice, light and probably pretty good for you.

IMG_0778 I would like to say Jessie was looking at me like this because she loves my cooking so much that she HAD to have some.  I would like to say that, but in all honesty, I had a vanilla Oreo in my hand when I took this.  Yes, the very terrible for you, no redeeming nutritional value Oreo.  And not even the chocolate ones.  But … well, …. no, no excuse.  I just wanted some.  And I did share.  But I loved the picture and it isn’t often we can get one where she is looking at you, so …

Happy eating – I have a few things on the menu this week.  Hopefully work will cooperate and I will get home in time to actually cook them this week.

Atmosphere and Food in Key West

For our last night in Key West we decided to focus a little more of atmosphere than food. We wanted good food, but really, we wanted the atmosphere so we headed to The Southernmost Beach Cafe. The reviews for this restaurant were great so we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was amazing.

I can’t say the food lived up to the reviews, but it was good. Very good. Just not great. The salad had a nice mango vinaigrette and was very fresh. Bob had a snapper that he thought was “outstanding” and I had the chicken marsala. It was good, but not the best I’ve ever had. I would assume the seafood is much better here than the non-seafood offerings, but I wasn’t willing to risk fish after the salmon incident a few months ago. So we had a good dinner with a great atmosphere (and excellent service). We decided to find dessert as we wandered along Duval, but never ended up stopping for dessert.

We did hit Krawl off Duval, a little bar that was so much quieter than the usual downtown Key West. It had an incredible beer selection – on tap and in bottles, so Bob was thrilled. (His beer at dinner was “ok”) He had a pint of something that I cannot remember and I had a nice glass of a red wine.

Since I did not get dessert either Friday or Saturday night, we skipped the breakfast at the B&B and headed to a place where I could have dessert for breakfast. It was the last day of vacation, I almost HAD to do it! Croissants de France looks like a little place on Duval, but is much bigger than the outside appears. I have to say, I had the best crepe – sweet crepe with pineapple, banana, coconut and mango. Sweet and tangy and perfect for breakfast. Bob had a banana crepe with (I think) a rum sauce.

So Key West was a great little break. We were able to relax and just enjoy the weather, the sights, the food and each other. Just what we needed.

If you want to see more pictures, take the page link on the side to Key West. I should have pictures with some descriptions up tonight.

Lazy Summer Day

There are days when you want to do everything and anything. Spend the day cooking, doing laundry, cleaning out drawers, being productive at work, getting the grocery shopping done, etc.  And then there are days where you want to sit on the couch, read a book and watch mindless television.  Yesterday was pretty much the lazy day for me.  While John went to check out his grad school options and Bob went to work, the kitties and I did very little around the house.  At one point I was watching Olympic tennis and looked up to see Tigger in the perfect picture of a happy, contented, lazy kitty.  (The best kind of kitties, in my opinion.)  The view got even better when I looked over at the other couch and saw little Miss Leia.

I’m just not sure you can get much cuter than these two.  Well … add Gracie and Jessie and it is possible, but I’m pretty sure Gracie was out making treaties with the alligators and vultures, and Jessie just hates having her picture taken, so I will take what I can get.  These days are few and far between, but I will enjoy them while I can.

Hope you get at least one lazy summer day before they are all gone!
